For school leaders
A school team ready to help, trained to know its role.
Wisconsin SERT gives students a supervised way to practice emergency response, build leadership, and connect classroom learning to community service.

Why bring SERT to your school?
Preparedness with boundaries
Students rehearse a calm, organized response within the school's existing emergency plan—not a parallel system.
Leadership through practice
Teamwork, communication, documentation, and decisions become skills students practice together.
A community connection
Training with EMS and healthcare professionals introduces students to service and public-safety pathways.
A normal school day, then a call
How a school-day response works
A call goes out
The school follows its emergency procedures and requests professional help when appropriate. A school announcement activates SERT and identifies the location.
The team responds
Trained students bring their medical bag, check that the scene is safe, and practice their assigned skills under the school's procedures and adult oversight.
A clear handoff
Students document what they observed and did, then communicate with the school nurse, staff, or arriving responders.
SERT students support the school's response; they do not replace school staff, the school nurse, 911, or emergency responders.
What it takes to get started
- An adult advisor or coordinator to guide students and work with school staff.
- A plan that fits the school's emergency procedures, including the nurse and local responders.
- Interested students, time for preparation and hands-on practice, and a plan for the medical bag.
Training that builds over time
Students study activation and scene safety before practicing assessment, emergency skills, documentation, and team handoffs. Advisors guide practice, and simulations give teams a chance to apply what they learn. Program credentials reflect completed requirements; external qualifications have their own issuing standards.
